Domaine Jean Royer

The owners and their history:
The Royer family has been living in Châteauneuf since the 19th century. Back then, they were not only vintners, but also bakers, or participated as masons in the building of the Château des Fines Roches. Emile Royer was the first professional vintner in the family; then came Jean-Marie, followed by Gaston Royer, who died at the early age of 38 when his son Jean was only two years old. Between 1965 and 1985, while Jean-Marie was studying, the family rented out its vineyards until this Jean-Marie resumed production in 1985. Its result was the first bottling with the vintage of ’85. The vineyard’s name at the time was still Clos de Marquise; however, pressure on Jean-Marie increased steadily to change the name because there was a winemaker of the same name in Bordeaux. In the end, he was forced to change the name. Today, Jean-Marie Royer has found a competent wine consultant in his old rugby friend Philippe Cambie.

Details on geography and history:
The vineyard has a cultivation area of five hectares in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region, on 0.8 hectares of which white wine is grown. All of the Royers’ grapevines are located in the two lieux-dits of Bois de la Ville and Les Grandes Serres in the southern part of the region.

Three – or sometimes four, depending on the harvest – red Châteauneuf-du-Papes and one white one are produced here. The standard red wine is made of 90% Grenache, 5% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre from grapevines that are about 40 years old. The same kinds of grapes – but from grapevines that are more than twice as old (80-100 years) are also used for the Cuvée Prestige. Depending on the harvest, the stems of 50-90% of the grapes are removed. In such extremely good years as 2001 and 2007, the “Hommage à mon Père” is made. 10% of this wine is aged in one-year old oak barrels.

In 2001, 2006, and 2007, the red “Cuvée Sola Syrah Régalis” consisting of 100% Syrah was made. In 2007, 1,300 bottles of this noble wine stored exclusively in oak barrels were produced. The white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made of 50% Grenache, 30% Bourboulenc, and 20% Clairette. Lactic acid fermentation is suppressed in order to guarantee the freshness of this wine.

The Royer family also makes a red Côtes du Rhône and various table wines on an area measuring not quite one hectare.
